Oh to be a high school senior again. Those days seem so long ago. The opportunities high school seniors have these days are nothing like what I had available when I was coming up in high school. They have more scholarships available, organizations that take you under their wing, mentor you and even prepare you for the job market. Last Friday, a couple hundred local high school seniors from various schools in the greater Kansas City area, gathered at the Ewing Kauffman Center for the annual SCLC Youth Leadership Conference. Breakfast and lunch were provided. The youth participated in several break-out sessions surrounding such topics as:

Choosing a Career Path
Sexual Choices
Social Networking/Self Respect
Teen Relationships
Teen Empowerment

Facilitators for the breakout sessions were: David Belt; Catherine Flowers; James Koppang; D. Antoine Lilly; and Kenton Schiele.

Morning guest speaker was legendary basketball star, Clay Johnson. The afternoon luncheon speaker was Professor Eddie Glaude, Jr.

Dr. Joycelyn Elders Speaks at SCLC Community Luncheon

Yesterday, I had the pleasure of meeting Dr. Joycelyn Elders, former U.S. Surgeon General under President Bill Clinton. She was the keynote speaker for the SCLC Community Luncheon held at the Marriott Hotel - Imperial Ballroom. People have said that she is a no-nonsense - tell it like it is person when it comes to health care. Well, they're right! She shoots straight from the hip and let everyone know her views on personal health care and health care education. During the luncheon, two local doctors were recognized for their community support. Dr. Herman Watson received the President's Award and Dr. Jasper Fullard received the Community Service Award.

SCLC Interfaith Service by Royal Photograhy

Sunday afternoon, SCLC continued their partnership with The Jewish Community Relations Bureau and American Jewish Community by taking part in their annual “Interfaith Service.” The service was held at the Community Christian Church, 4601 Main St., KCMO and a record number of attendants packed the church. This event is one of many activities that are scheduled during the month of January in celebration of Dr. King’s national holiday. During the Interfaith Service, Bunni Copaken, Community Volunteer with Kansas City Friends of Alvin Ailey, was given the 2012 Evelyn Wasserstrom award. Music was provided by the SCLC Mass Youth Choir and Tim Whitmer & Everette DeVan. A special dance celebration was rendered by “The Beloved Community” dancers; choreography by Rev. Michelle Harris-Gloyer. The guest speaker for the afternoon was well known writer, Leonard Pitts, Jr.

Oleta Adams Graces Stage at Sprint Artist Tribute

Saturday night, Kansas City renowned Oleta Adams was the feature artist during the Sprint Artist Tribute at the Marriott Hotel - Imperial Ballroom. What I knew most about Oleta was her famous "Get Here" ballad. Those were the days where I'm sure I could not have been the only one who got chills whenever the song came across the air waves. She did not disappoint me nor the few hundred guests who came out to hear her.

Just before she came on stage, the James Ward Band performed a few great hits. They even had the Latin "Luther Vandross" sing a couple of ballads. Yes, he did sound just like Luther. I can't forget about the "Spoken Word" talent by Taylor Brown.

SCLC Urban Summit Thrives to Rebuid Black Community

This past Saturday morning, several hundred young and older Kansas City residents flocked to the ACE Collegium Campus to participate in the 5th annual Urban Summit. I was one of many who gathered as early as 7:45 am. Yes, that's really early for me on Saturday. Heck, I can't find myself getting out of bed that early during the week. Call me lazy.

Anyhow, I digress. Like the previous summits, the morning/afternoon workshops focused on topics such as:

Restore and Rebuild a Community Through Economic Development
Rebuild and Restore a Community Through Education
Crime and its Devastating Impact on Pursuing Economic Development East of Troost
Biggest Loser to Biggest Winner - Fit for the Journey in 2012
Pursuing Housing and Neighborhood Stability on the Eastside of Troost

Youth workshop topics were:

High vs. College - "So You Think You Want to Go to a HBCU"
The Right Fit - Education as an Investment

While listening to Jim Nunnelly, I learned that were two college bound high school seniors were fortunate enough to acquire $40,000 in scholarships and another who acquired more than $30,000 in scholarships. WOW! And they say nothing good can come from our youth today. I'm thoroughly impressed.

The keynote speaker for the afternoon was SCLC national president, Isaac Newton Farris, Jr., nephew of civil rights leader, Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.

2012 has come upon us and I haven't blogged about anything since the last day of 2011. Please excuse me but then again I shouldn't apologize because that time was spent resting, spending time with the family, planning for the new year and working on a month long project. This project will be documented in spurts or phases. There will be lots of time spent on the road, in front of my computer and editing photos.

The first phase of the project was photographing the SCLC Dr. Martin Luther King Jr Opening Reception at the Penn Valley Community College - Carter Gallery, Friday evening. The special guest for the event was the new elected national SCLC President Isaac Newton Farris Jr, nephew to Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Click on his name to read his bio. While in Kansas City, he was also the keynote speaker for the Kansas City Urban Summit. Photo highlights to come later. In the interim, the posted photos are from the opening reception.

KC's Dedicated 12 | Special Project by Royal Photography

In the next few weeks, Kansas City will recognize twelve outstanding citizens for their community service and dedicated commitment to their employers. Unfortunately, I’m not at liberty to disclose which organization will be honoring them but let’s just say they will stand amongst the elite. The seven portraits above are their official photos that I took during their personal photo session; the remaining five (not pictured) submitted photos taken by their employers – it wouldn’t be ethical to display their photos knowing I didn’t take them. This is one of many special projects that I started late December and will come to an end mid-January 2012.

Today we received a lovely rave review from Will and Carolyn who married on Friday, August 5, 2011. Their wedding took place at the St. Michael & All Angels Episcopal Church and their reception was held at the Homestead Country Club. I originally chose this photographer because his pictures online were amazing and he certainly delivered! Sam is very personable and takes the time to get to know you before the big day. This weekend wasn't too bad for outdoor family photos. Tara and her three lovely children braved the brisk afternoon chill for pictures. I know Tara hears this all the time but I have to mention that she is the identical look-alike to Tracee Ellis Ross, prominent Hollywood actress. If you don't believe me, Google her and you be the judge. The photo above is one of my favorites - just because of the mannerisms of her youngest child. It's a beautiful feeling to photograph returning customers. A few years back, I photographed Warren and Channa's wedding here in Kansas City since then they are the proud parents of a beautiful baby girl. During the session, I concurred that she looks like Warren but after editing all the photos, she is a GOOD MIXTURE of both of them. Portraits in the Park by Royal Photography

This season has been the busiest for me in the family portrait arena. Last week, I photographed the 'Peghee' family in a local park. They have the cutest puppy, Jazz - they say he's a puppy but in my eyes he's BIG dog. Needless, he behaved well for all the pictures; for a minute he wanted to jump after all the geese that were swimming in the pond.

A rule to all photographers, do not take your coat off on a windy day and lay it on the rocks outlining the pond. Mother nature MIGHT just want to teach you a lesson by blowing it in the water. Luckily, Donnie was able to catch it before it floated away. Thanks Donnie for the quick hands.

One Night Stand Concert Tour | Royal Photography Special

Friday nights are normally spent at home watching movies but this time I embarked on something new - I went to a concert. Thanks to my brother, David, the Missouri State Post newspaper and my new friend, Mitch...for giving me the opportunity to photograph the 'One Night Stand' concert tour at The Midland, featuring Bobby Valentino, Chrisette Michele, and Avant. I woke up this morning with the idea of digging out of my archive several "famous" folk that I have met and photographed over the years. At the moment I was only able to pull out a few images from 2004, 2006 and 2007. I was afforded all of these images and opportunities from the Missouri State Post and Kansas State Globe newspapers. I was their official photographer and often traveled to document several special events. The majority were from various St. Louis Gateway Classic Sports Foundation weekend activities; if I recall, I photographed that event every year for 10 years.

Stay tuned, as I will be posting more images from my Archive Hall Of Fame in the coming months.

Reggie loves him some "Mallory" and vice versa. Both were referred to me from several past clients and you know how word of mouth works. Reggie, a local minister brought his "sword" (his bible) as a photo prop during the e-session. I loved it. One day, Mallory will become "first lady" of a church. Praise the Lord! I still remember my initial meeting with Brittany and Quintrell. They are both warm, sweet, and sincere, glowing from the outside inward. During our meeting, we talked about how so many of their friends recommended our services, what’s most important in their lives, and how important Christ is first in their lives. Like every wedding I wedding I photograph, there is ALWAYS something unique with every ceremony. On this occasion, both decided to have their ceremony start at 3:16 pm – in recognition of the scripture John 3:16.

Quintrell, being the man that he is, shared with me that anything that his future wife wanted, he was going to ensure she had that. Megan + Anthony | Fabulous Wedding Under a Rainbow

I just love weddings! If there was a way to photograph weddings every day, I would do it. Witnessing nervousness turn into smiles can't be documented enough. My neighbor referred Megan and her mother to me while in a nail shop. When I spoke with Megan's mom, she forewarned me that Megan would be a gorgeous bride and could be the best looking bride I've ever photographed. Mom, you were right. Megan was stunning; heck all of her sisters are stunning. I forgot to mention that Megan looks identical to her mother.

I learn a lot from family members about other family members at weddings. Mom told me that Megan and Anthony has known each other since they were little tike's. She told me that Anthony had a crush on Megan as early as 13 years of age. Well, Anthony's wish came true and after a 10 year courtship, they became husband and wife on a hill under a rainbow. They chose their wedding location because Megan's grandparents - whom she adored - were buried not too far from the wedding venue. That afternoon a brief shower came and during their vows, the rainbow appeared just over the southeastern horizon. Family members and guests believed that Megan's grandparents were smiling upon their union. I couldn't help but be moved by such a special moment.

Megan and Anthony have a 6-year old daughter together who is full of energy and love for her parents.

Me and Mrs. Jones | One Year Anniversary by Royal Photography

On 9.4.10 two special people from totally different backgrounds came together and became “The Jones”. Remember the great song, “Me and Mrs. Jones?” Well, this marvelous couple are really good friends of mine. I was a groomsman in their wedding too. Callie and Torrance celebrate their one year anniversary last weekend and Torrance wanted to surprise his bride with a romantic evening of drinks, dinner and…. He called me and wanted me to capture some special photos of his element of surprise for Callie.

If anyone knows Torrance, he is a young dude who always raises the bar in romancing his lady the old fashion way - spontaneous flowers, lavish gifts and unforgettable innuendos. Last weekend he planned a romantic dinner, yet private, at their wedding reception venue “Café Sebastienne” inside The Kemper Museum. He arranged for the same wedding flowers, table center pieces, the same table cloth, same wedding dinner menu and their favorite apple martini’s. There were other special surprise gifts that commemorated their wedding day. Callie was indeed surprised as I was too.

Torrance, on behalf of all the men out here, tone it down a bit and stop making us look bad. LOL!

Happy Anniversary to both of you and many more…bring on the children. LMBO!

Happiness seems to point directly towards Ashley and Nicholas. A few days ago, we took to the streets and ended up in some very quaint spots that they both loved and seemed embrace. For a moment I would like to believe they would love to freeze time just to cherish the chemistry and spontaneity - I did. During the session, I did see they both have contagious smiles that will enlighten any person they come in contact with. Their wedding is planned for July 2012 and I can't wait.

A few weekends ago Robert and Vercella - well known Kansas City residents - made their love connection official. Their wedding events were not your typical schedule of events. All the events were spread across three separate weekends. Vercella, a diva in her own right and Robert, the cool dapper gent had their official wedding ceremony in Lawrence, KS in late June. In early August there was a "sand ceremony" at their home where both sets of children - including grand children partook in a sentimental sand ceremony. The following day is when the celebration kicked off. Family, friends and distinguished guests witnessed a good ole fashion party.

When I met Carolyn she immediately told me that she chose our photography services because she like the images on our website but most importantly, she loved the candid images displayed. I didn't meet Will until the day of the wedding but after my initial consultation with her, she described him to the "T". Courtney and I had a blast photographing their wedding and the wedding party was the absolute the BEST! Both sides of the family and wedding party kept me laughing so hard it was hard to stay focus on the job at hand. Don't get me wrong - I loved it. If I can have fun at what I love doing best, what else is the to complain about? The bridesmaids dresses were sleek, sexy, and original. The ladies all wore different black dresses but yet the same 4-inch stiletto. The men's ties complimented the ladies shoes. Both Will and Carolyn went to high school together and share similar interests. Before the ceremony, we visited a few locations they share together while dating - one of them being Mission Bowl. Who would of thought a bride in full wedding gown and heels could bowl a "strike" on the first attempt? What I learned during the reception from family and friends - never doubt or under estimate Carolyn. When she sets her mind to something, it will come into fruition. The other highlight of the reception were the bride/groom cupcakes. They were gourmet designed and were the cupcakes I've ever had. Eating one would make a person lose a tooth - they were that sweet and delicious.

I got a really good vibe from both of them and can only believe their love for each other can't be broken.

This past Saturday, the extreme heat couldn’t deter Samantha and Travis from saying “I Do”. Their wedding took place at the famous Hawthorne House in Parkville, MO. From all the wedding day jitters, I couldn’t tell who was happier – the parents or the bride & groom. All I will say, both sets of parents love their children dearly. One of the most touching moments of the entire evening was the father daughter dance. Samantha’s first grade dance recital video with her father displayed in the background while she and her father danced. Talk about a touching moment. I still get a kick out of hearing how couples meet and to no surprise their love connection began as band students in school. Tailese and I were thrilled to be present to photograph their wedding.

Tamarra and Steven don't reside in Kansas City but have very long roots here with their families. I met them several months back and knew right off the bat that both of them knew what they wanted, knew they loved each other and most importantly - wanted to be around their families during this momentous occasion. Steven's personality reminds me of a good friend of mine - one who always has a contagious smile and has a positive outlook on life. Tamarra - well..., she spells her name with an extra 'r' which means she is a ra'R'e jewel. Both are very active in their Greek organization (Alpha Kappa Alpha sonority and Alpha Phi Alpha fraternity) and I'm sure I wouldn't be the first ones to say that Greek love was destiny.

In the past few years, I've noticed that weddings are far from traditional these days. Expect the unexpected is what I say. Maintaining traditional expectations are far from normal. Bridal couples are for ever wanting to be different from all their friends. If you can dream it, it can happen. So throw that three-ring binder and manual out the window.

Another craze on the scene are birdcage veils or the proper name 'French Tulle Cage Blusher' for brides. These are a new trend for the modern bride. Personally I think it’s sexy and adds a French flair to any bridal gown. I love these veils so much that I've used these brides in some of our wedding advertisements and even our BLOG. These veils draw a lot attention to the eyes and facial composition. Although I'm not a bridal consultant, I highly recommend these head pieces to compliment your wedding gown.

KC Youth Participate in Creative Dance

One thing I can admit is that I can't dance....well I won't go that far but I will say that I'm not that limber. This is my second opportunity to document the annual dance studio photos from Gotta Dance Creative Dance Center. Sydney, my 3-year old daughter might enjoy putting on a toot-toot, some tights and some ballerina shoes this summer.

Graduate is a time of celebration, accomplishment and new beginnings. Tuesday, the seniors of Lincoln College Preparatory Academy were able to say to Kansas City, "we did it". 115 students walked across the stage to receive their diplomas and to begin their new dreams and aspirations.

I was the official photographer for their commencement exercises and being surrounded by the excitement took me way back to 1988 when I graduated from high school; then four years later to graduate from college. All of the graduates shed tears of joy and memories that they will carry with them for the rest of their lives. Their commencement exercise theme was, "Let us not go where the path may lead, instead let us go where there is no path and leave a trail." WOW, that is powerful.
