Michelle Obama addressing supporters in the Kansas City 18th & Vine District.Tuesday night, November 4, was one of the most historical moments in U.S. history. Barack Obama was elected the first black president of the United States. In the 2008 United States Presidential election he won 53% of the popular vote, and 349 electoral votes to rival John McCain's 46% of the popular vote and 173 electoral votes.
Over 125,000 Chicago citizens of all nationalities packed the park to hear Barack’s victory speech. All I can say is that I WISH I was there. However, watching the excitement, tears, smiles, and joy on the faces of our fellow Americans on television could be felt all through out my home. My son, Andrew, 3 ½ years old, ran through the house screaming “Obama”! Tailese and I just looked at each other with amazement. Now it's our responsibility as parents to enrich the minds of Andrew and Sydney (our children) on this monumental event.
Forty-years ago, Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. was assassinated fighting for equal rights in our country – not just for African-Americans but for all races. He and his family sacrificed their lives in overcoming racism. One can only imagine what he and his wife, Coretta, are saying from the heavens above. I received an email today that depicted a cartoon sketch of Dr. King overlooking the clouds – stretching out his right arm and saying,
“Crispus Attucks fell so that Rosa Parks could sit, Rosa Parks sat so that Dr. Martin Luther King could march, Dr. Martin Luther King marched so that Barack Obama could run, and Barack Obama is running so that our children and grandchildren can fly.." I believe that 40-years later that God has shown his face an given all races “hope” and belief that we as people can put aside race and the color of our skin to follow a man in giving new direction to our country.
Last year in 2007, I got an opportunity to get photos of
Barack Obama when he came to Kansas City (Marriott Muelbach Hotel) for a Get Out The Vote Pep Rally; shortly after he announced his candidacy for U.S. President. Several of you made comments on types of photos that I photographed and even purchased copies. “I thank you” and glad that I was there to document history.
Last month in October, Barack’s wife,
Michelle Obama, visited Kansas City, MO in our 18th & Vine Jazz District for Get Out The Vote Rally and over 3,000 supporters packed 18th & Vine to encourage others to vote, make history, and support her husband to turn our country around. I was present during that rally and again many of you posted comments about the photos and even purchased photos. THANK YOU!
President-Elect Barack Obama and the soon to be first-family will occupy our nations White House for the first time as the First Family January 20, 2009. Let’s all support our new president and make a change in our country!
