2009 PTA Reflections Program

I was asked by a friend several weeks ago if I would act as a judge in a middle school arts competition. What an honor! I happily ablidged.

Each year, the Bernard Campbell Middle School PTA Reflections Program challenges students to create art inspired by a specific theme. Themes are selected from hundreds of ideas submitted by 7th and 8th grade Lee's Summit students to the PTA Reflections Program Theme Search. The theme selected for the 2009–2010 program was “Beauty is…” The competition took place at the Tony L. Stansberry Leadership Center.

Students participate in the Reflections Program by submitting entries to a local PTA or PTSA. Nationally, the program has six arts areas (dance choreography, film production, literature, musical composition, photography, and visual arts) and four grade divisions (primary, intermediate, middle/junior, and senior).

Some of the art pieces I reviewed were amazing and was blown away by the creative minds in the students. I can't remember if I was that creative or if I was just a book worm. Needless to say, I am very proud of our Lee's Summit School District, the parental/guardian leadership and the students themselves.

The 2009 Reflection judges and their categories were:

  • LITERATURE Carlton Logan, published poet
  • PHOTOGRAPHY Samuel Jordon II, Royal Photography LLC
  • MUSIC COMPOSITION Dan Roberts, Academy of Performing Arts
  • VISUAL ARTS Beverly Sims, Art teacher

While Shawn Edwards, Movie Critic for Fox 4 News and Sharon Brown of Monica’s School of Dance graciously agreed to participate as judges, there were no submissions this year in the arts areas of film production and dance choreography.

Best of luck to all the students who participated. Thank you again Shawnta for thinking of me.
